Costa Caleta (also known as Caleta de Fuste)
About 10km south of the airport lies Costa Caleta, one of the major tourist towns on the island. Caleta is situated on the east coast of the island approximately 30 minutes south of Corralejo, 20 minutes south of Puerto del Rosario and 50 minutes north of Jandia.
Costa Caleta has one long main street consisting of low-rise buildings where the main bars and restaurants are concentrated. There is a multitude of excellent restaurants in Caleta, which can cater for all tastes at very reasonable prices. Steaks and fish are particularly good, however there are also Chinese, Indian, Thai, Greek, Mexican, Portuguese, Italian, English and of course authentic Spanish restaurants all within a close area. Nightlife is prettied varied too with plenty of bars offering all kinds of entertainment, from live music to karaoke. For children, activities on offer include mini-golf, tennis courts, trampolines, pool tables and volleyball plus much more.
There are many quiet tree-lined streets, one of which leads to the main Caleta beach. The beach has been carefully constructed to avoid currents and is in the shape of a horseshoe. This ensures it is perfectly safe for children of all ages. Those wanting to be a little more adventurous can go diving, hire jet skis or learn to windsurf at the water centre on the beach. The harbour is home to many yachts, catamarans and boats which provide day trips, as well as providing a beautiful backdrop in the evenings, overlooked by the castle El Castillo.
The resort boasts a Championship Golf Course, which in 2004 was host to the Spanish Open. There is a brand new indoor shopping complex, The Atlantico Centre, with a good selection of shops and cafes and also a spar supermarket. Within the complex there is also a multi-screen cinema and a 10 pin bowling alley. Behind the shopping centre is another wonderful beach with lagoon style bays.
There is a new waterpark, just 30 minutes drives away in Corralejo, which is great fun for both adults and children alike and 40 minutes drive to the south brings you to Paradise Park nr. Costa Calma, which is a sub-tropical zoo and cactus gardens, another great day out!
"With three thousand hours of sunshine
a year, Fuerteventura is the closest Canary Island to the African coast
and is the second largest (after Tenerife) of all the islands. The weather
conditions of Fuerteventura are very similar to Florida and Mexico which
are on the same latitude, which make this the ideal holiday location."
